One Day You Will Understand

For my graduation project, I made an animation and a publication about the relationship between me and my father. My father is a social worker so our relationship is "supposed to be great," we talk about everything, except emotions. Therefore, I won't say we have a close bonding but indeed we know we cared for each other. We are both rational people so we never quarrel, also my father has his own point of view in his role, as a father. I aim to show the audience the father's education attitude and how daughter takes it, through my personal story. I think there must be some people who are not good at expressing themselves, and they can feel related.

For this animation, I worked on traditional 2D frame by frame animation using mainly ink, watercolour, gouache and crayon. The voice over is an actual recorded phone call between me and my father, and I chose to use an iconic thing in my childhood memories to be the subject which connect the whole film. I used to play basketball when I was a kid, yet I didn’t enjoy that, and my father knew it. I started to play basketball because he was happy to see me playing, but He didn’t let me give up even though he knows I suffered a lot. This was a neglected wound of me.

For the publication, I re-illustrated part of a book that written by my father and was published when I was 7. The book includes collection of true stories between different parents and their children, my dad wrote three stories about us and today I just wanted to recall these beautiful moments and to respond to him after 14 years.

Work in progress

All pages in the publication are etching prints. The strokes create a sketchy but detailed style, which I found interesting. Another reason I chose to use traditional printing method is because I think the way we cannot fully control or guarantee how the outcomes look like, surprise me a lot, and how the ink spreads on the paper enriches the prints.
